IoT-Leb

Internet  of  Things  Made  for  Lebanon

The first IoT seminar in Lebanon

Bringing together the Internet of Things community in Lebanon

By embedding electronics and Internet connectivity capabilities in everyday objects, the Internet of Things (IoT) is paving the way for a smarter environment, interconnecting the physical realm of Things and the virtual world of applications in the cloud. In Lebanon, innovative applications and services offered by IoT will bring substantial benefits and opportunities to the global economy. Industry, agriculture, health system, and urban planning will gain more efficiency and competitiveness by leveraging the intelligence, precision, data analysis, and control capabilities provided by IoT solutions.

To develop a mature IoT ecosystem in Lebanon, specific needs and potential challenges related to Internet and wireless infrastructure, regulatory aspects, investment and technical development, need to be addressed. Efficient IoT solutions require new kinds of collaboration since IoT is not about a single technology, but a set of technological enablers from hardware miniaturization, ubiquitous connectivity, to advanced data analytics and cloud computing.

IoT-Leb is the first seminar on the Internet of Things in Lebanon. It aims to foster multi-stakeholder collaboration by bringing together Lebanese institutions, universities, funding and incubating partners, and industrials who are involved in IoT. Speakers from different backgrounds will present the recent advances in IoT technologies, business opportunities, and innovation processes in Lebanon.

The event is an exciting networking opportunity to learn about the latest Lebanese ideas and success stories, share experiences and information, and develop recommendations for the IoT field.

This first edition contributes to building an active IoT community in Lebanon making IoT-Leb a major annual event.

  • With the advent of IoT, the Internet has moved to a model where devices connect to other devices, applications or services, in order to implement new types of solutions. Most of the devices currently used in the latter have rather limited capabilities, seeking a balance between price, performance and power consumption. As a consequence, the main part of the – computing intensive – logic that defines IoT applications is implemented and executed today on IoT cloud-based platforms, which provide the required software and hardware infrastructure.

However, considering the continuous raise of connected devices' performance and the drop of their price, it makes sense to think that in the near future, part of the processes that are currently running on IoT cloud platforms will be moved back to “smarter” devices, whether they are edge devices (e.g. gateways) or end-nodes. This will result in a shift from a centralized, orchestration-only model, to a distributed and multi-agents model, with less centralized orchestration and more collaboration among devices, platforms and third party services; where IoT applications will be built by assembling smart objects capabilities.

In order to support such a vision, it is necessary to provide an adequate distributed middleware infrastructure, which will provide most of the low-level features, such as location transparency, service directory, security, transport, etc. Our project aims at specifying the architecture of such a middleware, in collaboration with scriptr.io.

Energy Monitoring and Targeting allows to continuously measure, log and analyze energy consumption in different areas and energy usage of a specific industrial facility or commercial building.

The main objective is to set measureable Key Energy Performance Indicators and a thorough energy book keeping to ultimately achieve Energy and Cost Savings.

SMG-Energy (www.smgmena.com) , an Energy Management Services provider, has developed a Cloud based Energy Monitoring and Targeting program, based on HOBO Cloud Based Data Loggers (www.onsetcomp.com) that will be proudly showcased in the first edition of IOT-LEB
